Lucy Powell has been picked by Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn as Shadow Education Secretary.
You might well say "Who?"
Apart from a brief spell (less holidays) from October 2013 to November 2014 when she was a Shadow Education Minister with responsibility for 'Early Years', she is not noted for any significant interest in Education - certainly not special education.
She did visit the Bridge College (FE college for students with learning difficulties and disabilities) in her constituency back in March this year. She had this to say, which I found just a bit different from the usual reflection on such visits "I also spoke to the Student Council about the voting system and some of the difficulties people with disabilities can face exercising their right to vote. We discussed accessing the polling station and how to apply for a proxy vote."
The Guardian did a readable piece on her in November 2014 when she was moved from the DfE to join the Shadow Cabinet, as a key person in Ed Miliband's election strategy team. The Guardian described her as a "Manchurian street fighter" and a "founder member of the Miliband fan club".
theyworkforyou.com records very little of any engagement in educational matters. Likewise, public whip.org Both links reveals her support of a replacement for Trident, the use of British military forces overseas and the EU - interestingly enough, not policies advocated by the new Leader.
