What are "The characteristics of a foresightful organization"? The link came to me via twitter. Thanks to John B Mahaffie of the The Foresight Network for the original article. It's a table in 2 columns, setting out "what to be and what not to be, presuming you want to be a 'foresightful' organization". John B writes: "I urge you to think this through, and see what's true in the organizations you are a part of. It's possible to improve the... Read more →

Dominic Lawson takes a typically independent line in today's Independent in the case of Frances Inglis, convicted of murder for taking the life of her brain-damaged son: "Other people's sympathies are with Frances Inglis. Mine are with her son." These are not easy issues. As a young woman I know of lies in hospital following a car accident just before Christmas, her neck broken, and family and friends watch for any sign of recovery, perhaps I paid just a little... Update today on CE2.0 group on Facebook. For those interested in how Web2.0 might benefit the CE community: This might be worth keeping an eye on: "The Web 2.0 principles of user engagement, viral outreach, rapid development, and real-time intelligence that guided President Obama during his campaign are the same principles that will shape the future of our political operating system." Two conference events are flagged: * Gov 2.0 Summit - www.gov2summit.com * Gov 2.0 Expo - www.gov2expo.com You can... Read more →

Government statistics: Very briefly & in haste, dry as dust unless this sort of thing interests you: "Unlocking Innovation: Working with UK Public Sector information and data. "Advised by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt and others, government are opening up data for reuse. This site seeks to give a way into the wealth of government data and is under constant development. We want to work with you to make it better." It's actually an exciting and potentially rich... "Conductive Education" is not an alternative therapy; it is an alternative education. "Conductive Education" is a philosophy of education. It is an integrated system and practice of education. It is not about what goes on in hospitals and health centres; it is about what goes on in schools. It is not about what physical therapists do; it is about what teachers do. It is not about the training of physical therapists; it is about the training of teachers. It is... Read more →

On twitter, Mike Chitty (@mikechitty) describes his interests thus: "enterprise, management, entrepreneurship, family, community development, breadmaking and fish-keeping". His blog is headlined: "Mike Chitty's Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in the Community blog. "Speaker, Trainer, Coach, Consultant, Adviser - for a different perspective on enterprise" I had the good fortune to spend some time with Mike this morning when he visited Paces. Two notes before I return to my meeting with Mike. Yesterday, I posted some brief thoughts on the SAHK Business... Read more →

Andrew Sutton's posting "I feel rather humbled" (drawing attention to the publication of papers on the work of SAHK collected and edited by Ivan Su) reminded me that I had intended to re-visit the SAHK website and to do so regularly throughout this year of the 7th World Congress there. This morning, I was initially looking whether it was possible to purchase a copy of the book, as background reading ahead of the Congress but instead found myself reading and... Read more →

Take them with a pinch of salt, if you like. But we like lists, don't we? 10 Best films of the 2000s? 100 Things to do before you die? The Big Read. The top 100? What makes for success? What would be your top 10 factors of success for organisations? Do you agree with Hamish MacRae's list in today's Independent: The Science of Success: what works and why Here's his list: 1. Optimism – balanced by realism: Pessimism paralyses 2.... Read more →

I'd like all my blog readers, followers on Twitter and friends on Facebook to read this: Impatience, irreverence, and indestructibility Like James, I too am "just a Dad". I had the very great good fortune to meet James in Vancouver, where he lives, the year I went over there to support my eldest daughter competing in the World Triathlon championships. Read more →
